Guilin & Yangshuo

Guilin & Yangshuo: a first-time travel guide

Come for the karst landscape and stay for the countryside around Yangshuo. Give yourself a weather buffer instead of making one boat trip the only chance to enjoy the scenery.

Make room for the place

Limestone peaks. A slower river journey.

When to go

Rain and river conditions matter as much as temperature. Spring and summer can be wet; autumn is another option to investigate. Check local forecasts and operator notices before any water activity.

A starting point for your stay

Choose a Guilin arrival night if it fits your transport, then a Yangshuo base for the countryside. A rural hotel can be peaceful, but check how you will reach restaurants and departure transport.

Getting there & getting around

Guilin, Guilin North and Guilin West are different stations. Yangshuo railway station is outside Yangshuo town; include the onward road transfer when comparing routes.

What to book ahead

A Li River cruise and a Yulong River raft trip are different experiences. Confirm departure pier, endpoint, transfer, age or mobility restrictions, weather policy and what is included before paying.

A taste of the place

Try Guilin rice noodles and ask which broth and toppings are used. Pack drinking water for countryside outings and plan a meal stop before leaving town.

A suggested pace

Your days in Guilin & Yangshuo

An original suggested itinerary. Reorder days around reservations, weather and your arrival time.

  1. Day 1 · Arrive in Guilin

Settle in and take a short lakeside or riverside walk. Confirm the next day’s transfer and the exact departure pier if you have booked a cruise.

  2. Day 2 · Follow the landscape to Yangshuo

Choose a confirmed Li River cruise or a road transfer with time for scenery. Check in at Yangshuo and keep the evening simple.

  3. Day 3 · Countryside at your own pace

Plan a short guided walk or a cycle route appropriate to your ability, with a weather alternative. Add a Yulong River activity only if conditions and operator requirements suit everyone.

  4. Day 4 · Leave room for weather

Use this optional day for an outing postponed by rain, a village visit or a restful morning. Allow enough time for the transfer to your actual station or airport.
