Background & setting
The Hanfeizi opens its Five Vermin chapter with inventions attributed to ancient sages. Suiren follows Youchao, the builder of shelters. The point is not to provide a scientific history of fire, but to show how a useful response to one age’s problems wins recognition.
The story
People eat uncooked foods and suffer illness in the story’s imagined beginning. A sage learns to kindle fire by friction and use it to transform food. What was once difficult to eat can be prepared, shared and made part of a new routine.
The people welcome the invention and recognize its maker as Suiren. His importance lies in enabling an everyday practice, rather than conquering a monster. In the surrounding philosophical argument, even such valuable discoveries must be understood in relation to their own time.
How to read it
Civilization is imagined through practical care: a change in food preparation can matter as much as a king’s victory.
