Nature & perseverance

Jingwei fills the sea

精卫填海Jīngwèi tiánhǎi

A tiny bird carries twigs and stones against the immensity of the sea.

Background & setting

Jingwei appears at Fajiu Mountain in the Shanhaijing’s Northern Mountains. The bird is linked to Nüwa, a daughter of Yandi whose name is written 女娃. A place description and an unusual bird open into a story of drowning, transformation and persistent action.

The story

The Classic of Mountains and Seas describes a bird on Mount Fajiu, with a patterned head, white beak and red feet. Its call gives its name: Jingwei. The text then reveals that this bird was once Nüwa, a daughter of the Flame Emperor, who drowned in the eastern sea.

Transformed into the bird, she repeatedly carries wood and stones from the western mountains to fill the sea. The source does not end with a finished dam or a defeated ocean. The power of the image lies in the repeated act and the difference in scale between the bird and the water.

The name of the drowned girl, 女娃, is different from 女娲, the creator and sky-mender, although the two names can look similar in English. Keeping the characters beside the romanization helps prevent this common confusion.

How to read it

The idiom often praises perseverance. The tale can also be read through grief, protest and refusal to accept loss, rather than reduced to a cheerful lesson about success.
